Hodgson is a stick in the mud...Nothing more, nothing less...

In future, the back four should look like this

Clyne Stones Cahill Cresswell

Phil Jones is a joke...every other country will laugh and see him as a weak link to exploit...

It's funny how after years when we had no left-sided players suddenly there are loads

Baines
Bertrand
Cresswell
Gibbs
Shaw

Some with good delivery...like Baines,Cresswell or Shaw could even double up on the left-side of midfield...after all most teams have their best players attacking down the right side of the pitch...

4-1-3-2 or 3-1-4-2

Yeah I'd agree with that, but to be honest, I don't think the players are bred and brought through to be that way anymore, we might see the very odd exception, but youngsters are not brought through to think for themselves, which isn't a good environment to breed leaders.

We'll see, but for now, Cahill & Smalling are by far the best we've got, hopefully Stones progresses enough to push them for next summer.

Agreed, Smalling has come on leaps and bounds. The only think I think we lack is a leader. Cahill isn't one of those. Cahill is aided club wise because he has Terry alongside him.

Jaglielka might bring a bit of leadership quality being that he is club captain of Everton, but he isn't good enough with his distribution for international level.

I don't see any born leader at the moment in central defence. I'm not too sure on Jones and don't know enough about Stones, Chambers etc.

Well done Rossal, at least someone else is watching him actually play instead of just lazily judging him on the player he was a couple of years ago, he is a very good defender now, hence why Van Gaal, the Manchester United manager, made him captain for the back end of the season.

Jagielka is a shocking centre half, he looked like a non league player at the world cup, but there's not long standing agenda against him.

Re: Aren't we playing Slovenia in a bit
And Smalling is improving as a defender, still a bit to go....but his distribution and positioning has improved varstly this season

Big fan of Stones too though, him Smalling and Jones to battle out playing alongside Cahill next summer

Re: Aren't we playing Slovenia in a bit
Thought we played well yesterday, created plenty of chances and had alot of energy going forward. Could of been 4 or 5 if Rooney and Sterling could finish better

Some selection and substitute questions but overall was pleased

Sort our defence out or get a regular back 4 playing each game from now until the euros and we could give a good account of ourselves

Chris Smalling may be a "good athlete" but doesn't appear to be able to defend whatsoever.

All yesterday proved to me is that we will be beaten as soon as we meet a good quality side, as usual.

That defence is our problem. Need to replace the whole back 4 based on that showing. Smalling and Cahill were poor as a pair but is there better? The full backs were shocking. Clyne needs to be the first choice left back I think.

Right back? There has to be better than Jones. Central defence? Stones is better if fully fit but we need someone to emerge in the next few years. Oxford is my hope but I realise that is with the C & B specs on :-)

Walcott's deft touch to put Rooney in for the winner was superb.

Finally woke up and beat a technically limited but full of effort Slovenia...

Hodgson made some strange selections & formations...

Got lucky with 2 good strikes from Wilshere...and an almost gift for Rooney...

Well done for the 3 points...but sort it out in future...as at risk to lose playing sloppy and too slow for most of the game...

England will have a new midfielder soon with the lad from Chelsea (loftus-cheek or whatever his name is) no doubt, purely because he plays for Chelsea.

My Chelsea scouts tell me he's not really that good, so he'll have 50 caps by 2020!

Then again he can't be any worse than some of the lads playing at the moment.

Re: Aren't we playing Slovenia in a bit
I just heard a commentator say the dumbest thing ever, after Wilshire scored his second goal he said " That might just be better than the first one " well yes it was and much much better or was he busy kissing Townsend's pee pee during the build up to the goal

Riosleftsock

Greaves was a great finisher, and a top striker.

But, the best finisher I have ever seen was Pop Robson.

I would say Cottee if we are talking just about West Ham, if not I'd say Ian Rush!

Lucky to be in such a poor group but the goals were brilliant.

Terry was abysmal in the Germany defeat in 2010.
2016 might be a bit of a stretch for the DAFT RACIST.
Cahill , Stones and Smalling are probably the best options though it would be good to see others emerging as none are 100% convincing.

Re: Aren't we playing Slovenia in a bit
Terry should still be the backbone of the team, he showed that last season. He should have been at the World Cup too.

RM10 10:29 Sun Jun 14
Re: Aren't we playing Slovenia in a bit
dont like him but any other country would have had Terry in their team, crap FA.

Re: Aren't we playing Slovenia in a bit
We struck lucky with the draw no doubt and to be fair nobody is going overboard with us having a 100% record.

As for Jagielka it's a matter of opinion but I reckon that Smalling is at least his equal now having had a good last half season under LVG.

Re: Aren't we playing Slovenia in a bit
Jagielka is the best of a bad bunch and has an understanding with Cahill.

Smalling is poor, as showed over the last two games.

People need to remember the standard of opposition this is.
